The Karkonosze Mountains form the highest mountain chain in Silesia. It is the
border range between Poland and the Czech Republic. The highest peak is the Śnieżka
(Schneekoppe in German) at 1602 meters. The town of Karpacz (German Krummhübel)
at the foot of the Śnieżka is less than an hour from Jelenia Góra. The source of the Elbe
is near Špindlerův Mlýn (German Spindlermühle) at an altitude of about 1400 m.
The Karkonosze Mountans are a national park and nature preserve. In addition it is
a biosphere preserve under the protectorate of the UNESCO.
If you are lucky, you might
even see the mountain spirit "Rübezahl" on your wanderings.
